The art library

My art library holds some twelve thousand volumes. It is an essential working tool for researching the history of works of art: the exhibitions in which they were shown, the publications in which they are cited and the collections through which they have passed.

Scope and contents

The library focuses mainly on Italian and international art of the twentieth century and the contemporary period. The publications span from the nineteenth century to the present day, with a substantial number of titles published between the 1960s and the 2000s.

The library includes:

  • catalogues raisonnés and general catalogues of artists;
  • gallery exhibition catalogues, including hard-to-find titles;
  • museum and institutional catalogues;
  • auction catalogues;
  • art periodicals, both historical and recent;
  • monographs and critical essays in Italian, English, French and German.

Method and professional use

Consulting the sources directly makes it possible to verify the details of a work with precision. A period gallery catalogue can attest to the presence of the work in a given year, confirm its dimensions and medium and, in some cases, identify its provenance. A catalogue raisonné shows whether and how the work is recorded, while an auction catalogue documents that the work was offered for sale at a specific date and place.

Immediate access to this documentation makes research faster and more thorough. The library supports all the activities of the studio: from art historical research and due diligence to reconstructing the exhibition history and literature of a work, through to the preparation of appraisals and the cataloguing of collections.
